New research from a study conducted by the University of Michigan demonstrates how the brain’s reward system is altered after someone smokes marijuana.
Participant’s brains were monitored while they played a game where rewards (monetary) were possible. The study showed that over time, an extended use of marijuana was associated with a lower response to a reward. Thus, the study suggests that marijuana had impacted their reward system.
The researchers emphasized that it wasn’t that the participants who had used marijuana did not care at all about the reward but they did show less brain activity and subdued responses when receiving a reward compared to those participants who had not smoked.
