When someone you love is struggling with substance use, finding the right treatment program can feel overwhelming. Families often compare drug rehab centers, search for rehab facilities near them, and try to understand what actually helps people recover.
Voted one of America’s Best Addiction Treatment Centers by Newsweek six years in a row, New Bridge Foundation® offers a full continuum of care, including detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient services, and telehealth options for California residents.
Founded in 1968, New Bridge Foundation® has spent more than five decades helping adults in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond overcome addiction. Addiction treatment has changed dramatically over the years, but one thing has remained consistent for us. We believe people deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and genuine care when they take the step to seek help.
Many people arrive carrying guilt or shame about their substance use. Our staff works hard to make sure the first experience at New Bridge Foundation® feels welcoming and supportive from the moment someone walks through the door. From that first conversation through every stage of treatment, our focus is on helping people build healthier, more stable lives.
What to look for in a drug rehab center
Not all addiction treatment centers provide the same quality of care. When comparing drug and alcohol rehab centers, it helps to look for programs that provide:
Individualized treatment plans tailored to each person’s needs and recovery goals
Evidence-based counseling approaches, like cognitive-behavioral therapy
Dual diagnosis treatment that addresses both addiction and mental health conditions
A continuum of care that supports recovery beyond residential treatment
Ongoing community and aftercare support
At New Bridge Foundation®, these principles shape the way we design our addiction treatment programs. Our philosophy views addiction from a holistic perspective that includes the physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual aspects of a person’s life. Treatment plans are individualized and goal-oriented, and, whenever possible, families are included in the recovery process.
Levels of care at New Bridge Foundation®
Recovery often requires different levels of support over time. Our admissions team works with each person to determine which level of care will best support their recovery journey.
Our continuum of care includes:
- Detox services that provide medical supervision during withdrawal
- Short-term residential treatment and long-term residential treatment, where participants live on campus and focus fully on recovery
- Intensive outpatient treatment that allows participants to receive structured support while living at home or in sober housing
Our residential program takes place on our Berkeley campus, which includes historic buildings and welcoming outdoor spaces where participants can step away from daily stress and focus on recovery. The setting allows people to slow down, reconnect with themselves, and build healthier routines while participating in counseling and recovery support.
Dual diagnosis and specialized treatment programs
Many people seeking help for addiction are also living with mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, or trauma. When substance use occurs alongside these conditions, it is known as a co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis.
Our dual diagnosis treatment program addresses both conditions together. Participants work with counselors who help them understand how mental health and substance use interact and develop practical strategies for managing both in recovery.
New Bridge Foundation® also offers specialized programming for veterans and active duty service members. Located in the Bay Area and close to a Coast Guard station, we serve many members of the military community and accept TRICARE insurance.
Service members often face unique stressors related to deployment, trauma, and transition back to civilian life. We work to provide support that reflects those experiences while creating an environment where participants feel understood and respected.
Drug rehabilitation and addiction treatment options
Addiction can involve alcohol, opioids, stimulants, prescription medications, and other substances. Effective drug rehabilitation focuses on more than stopping substance use. It also helps people understand the patterns and circumstances that contributed to addiction.
At New Bridge Foundation®, substance abuse treatment combines several therapeutic approaches. Participants take part in individual counseling, group counseling, educational sessions, and recovery planning.
Our multidisciplinary clinical team includes physicians, nurses, licensed mental health professionals, and certified drug and alcohol counselors who collaborate to develop individualized treatment plans. The goal of every program is to help participants gain the education, skills, and support needed to live productive and healthy lives without drugs or alcohol.
What sets New Bridge Foundation® apart
New Bridge Foundation® has served the Bay Area community for more than 55 years. Over that time, we have seen addiction treatment evolve in many ways, but our commitment to compassionate, person-centered care has remained the same.
As a nonprofit organization, we focus on providing meaningful treatment rather than luxury amenities. Our programs are designed to give people the space and support they need to step away from daily pressures and focus on recovery.
Because we are a smaller program, our team works closely together and can respond quickly when someone needs additional support. Participants are not treated like numbers. Staff members know people by name and take time to understand their experiences and goals.
Our Berkeley campus also offers a distinctive environment for recovery. The residential program operates out of historic buildings that create a warm and welcoming setting. Outdoor spaces give participants opportunities to relax, reflect, and connect with others in recovery.
Long term connection is another important part of our community. Alumni regularly return for meetings and events such as Saturday Grad Night, where graduates share their experiences with people currently in treatment. Some alumni stay connected for decades, returning to visit or calling to let us know how their lives have changed.
These relationships remind us that recovery is not just about completing a program. It is about building a life that continues to grow long after treatment ends.
